Hudson Soft's Adventure Island (originally adapted from Sega's *Wonder Boy*) is one of the most challenging platformers on the NES. Players control Master Higgins as he runs across tropical islands to rescue Princess Tina from the Evil Witch Doctor. Featuring a unique hunger-depletion mechanic, hidden eggs containing power-ups, and slippery skateboard physics, it requires quick reactions. This strategy guide covers the health survival loop, weapons, egg locations, and world bosses.

1. The Hunger / Health Depletion Loop

Unlike standard platformers where time is your only limit, Master Higgins has a **Vitality Meter** at the top of the screen composed of 11 bars. This meter drops constantly as time passes. If it reaches zero, you lose a life:

Many eggs are invisible and can only be spawned by walking over a specific spot. You will know an egg is near when your thrown weapon disappears or hits a solid block in mid-air. Jump at that location to spawn the egg. Hidden eggs often contain milk bottles (which fully restore vitality) or keys that transport you to bonus stages in the sky.
