Nintendo's 1983 arcade conversion of Popeye is a beloved retro classic on the NES. Designed by Genyo Takeda and Shigeru Miyamoto, players control the famous sailor man as he climbs multi-level stages to collect tokens of affection dropped by Olive Oyl. All the while, Popeye must avoid his arch-rival Brutus, who pursues him relentlessly across platforms. This guide covers stage goals, Brutus AI, Sea Hag bottle hazards, and optimal spinach usage.
1. Stage Objectives & Item Collection
Unlike other action games where you must defeat all enemies, in Popeye, you win by catching all items dropped by Olive Oyl before they fall into the water at the bottom of the screen. If an item floats in the water for too long, it sinks, costing you a life:
Stage 1: Docks (Hearts): Olive drops 24 red hearts. You must catch them as they drift back and forth down the screens.
Stage 2: Street (Music Notes): Olive plays her harp, dropping 16 musical notes. Watch out: notes drift in wider curves, making them harder to catch mid-air.
Stage 3: Ship (S-O-S Letters): Olive is held prisoner by a vulture. She drops the letters S-O-S. Collect all 24 letters to build a ladder to rescue her.
2. Brutus AI and Sea Hag Hazards
The screen is filled with active threats that you cannot punch normally. You must learn their movement limits:
Brutus (Bluto): The primary threat. He walks across platforms, jumping between floors to chase you, or reaching up/down to grab you from adjacent platforms. You cannot punch Brutus normally; hitting him only stuns him for a split second.
Sea Hag: Hides in the upper corners and throws glass bottles down at you. You can punch falling bottles to destroy them for 100 points, but make sure your timing is perfect.
Bernard the Vulture (Stage 3): Flies horizontally across the top floors. Punch Bernard to knock him out for 1000 points.
3. The Spinach Power-Up
A single can of **Spinach** appears on the overworld once per level, moving along the platforms. Hitting the spinach can triggers Popeye's theme song and activates his power mode:
Invincibility: Popeye turns red and gains incredible speed.
Defeating Brutus: Run directly into Brutus and press Punch to knock him off the screen. Doing so awards **3,000 points** and removes Brutus from play for several seconds, giving you free reign to collect Olive's items.
Spinach Timing: Do not grab the spinach as soon as it appears. Instead, wait until Brutus has cornered you or when there are multiple items falling near the bottom. Activating spinach saves lives and maximizes scoring.
4. Interactive Stage Elements
Each stage has a unique interactive element to exploit:
Stage 1 Barrel: Punch the heavy punching bag at the top right when Brutus is directly underneath it on the bottom floor. A heavy barrel will fall, trapping Brutus's head and neutralizing him temporarily for 2000 points.
Stage 2 Seesaw: Jump off the side platform onto the seesaw to launch Olive's helper, Wimpy, up to grab items, or use it to quickly launch Popeye to the top floor.
