Created by Jordan Mechner and ported to the NES by Konami in 1992, Prince of Persia is one of the earliest examples of the "cinematic platformer" genre. Featuring rotoscoped animation that mimics realistic human movement, players must escape the Grand Vizier Jaffar's dungeons to rescue the Princess within a strict **60-minute real-time limit**. This guide details the platforming physics, sword combat tactics, dungeon traps, and potion upgrades.
1. Rotoscoped Platforming Controls
Because the Prince moves with realistic momentum, controls require precise planning. You cannot adjust your position instantly:
Walking vs. Running: Holding the action button while pressing Left or Right causes the Prince to walk slowly. Always walk when exploring new screens, as running will send you off ledges or into spikes.
Ledge Grab: If you fall or jump near a ledge, hold the action button to grab it, allowing you to pull yourself up safely.
Standing Jump: Press Up to jump straight up (useful to test for loose ceiling tiles).
Running Jump: Press Up while running to execute a wide horizontal jump, crossing two-tile gaps.
2. Dungeon Traps & Hazards
Jaffar's dungeons are filled with traps that trigger instant death or damage:
Spike Pits: Spikes emerge from the ground when stepped on. Walk slowly to cross spike traps without taking damage.
Chomper Slicers: Large steel blades that snap shut periodically. Time your run to sprint through right as the blade opens.
Loose Ceiling Tiles: Some floor tiles are loose and will fall when stepped on. Stand underneath them and jump to drop them safely before walking across.
3. Sword Combat & Dueling Tactics
You must acquire the **Sword** in Level 1 before you can fight guards. Dueling is a matter of rhythm, not button-mashing:
Parrying (Up): Press Up to block an incoming sword strike. Execute a block immediately before the guard's strike connects.
Striking (A): Press A to swing your sword. Only strike immediately after parrying a guard's attack (riposte), as they will block random attacks.
The Fat Guard (Level 6): A heavy guard who blocks almost all standard attacks. Try to back him up against a chomper trap or drop tiles on his head.
4. Potion Reference Guide
Various bottles are scattered on the floors. Drink them by standing over them and pressing Down:
Red Potion: Restores one unit of your health meter.
Blue Potion: Poison! Subtracts one unit of health. Avoid drinking blue bottles.
Large Red Potion: Permanently increases your maximum health meter by 1 unit. Highly valuable.
Green Potion (Slow Fall): Temporarily slows down your falling speed, allowing you to survive long falls down pits.
